Math Professional Development Opportunity Summer/Fall Semester 2009-2010
Silicon Valley: A Laboratory for Learning
Laboratory for Learning is an initiative of the Sustainable Valley Foundation and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, in partnership with its member companies and Intel Corporation, to help provide local K-8 teachers with tools to be successful in the classroom.
Participating teachers receive 80-hours of content-rich mathematics professional development and a stipend. The 80-hour "Intel Math" prorgram that teachers receive is derived from a professional development program that successfully links course completion with improved student achievement.
The math content (90%) focuses on number theory, operations, functions, and algebra; the interrelatedness of arithmetic, algebra and geometry; and presents mathematics as a second language. The instructional content (10%) includes topics on: representations, differentiation, manipulative, and how students make sense of equality, place value, and fractions. A mathematician and mathematics educator will co-facilitate the course.
Participants are required to attend all training dates, complete homework, complete evaluation surveys, and complete pre and post-tests.
Participating teachers who complete the entire 80 hours will receive a stipend of $1250 courtesy of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and the Sustainable Valley Foundation. (Participants may elect to receive graduate course units through CSU-East Bay and the remaining balance of the stipend).
All training and course materials are free. Professional Learning Communities are being developed to coincide with training.
